ABOUT PPIB
Continuing the Legacy of Indonesian
Student Movements
Since the establishment of Indische Vereeniging in 1908, later known as Indonesische Vereeniging in 1922, Indonesian
students in the Netherlands have played an important role as a collective intellectual movement. This movement
contributed not only through ideas and academic engagement, but also through diplomatic efforts and the struggle for
Indonesian independence.
In 1926, under the leadership of Mohammad Hatta, the organization evolved into Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia (PPI),
marking a significant milestone in uniting Indonesian students abroad with a shared vision for contributing to the
nation.
After a period of transformation and re-initiation in 2003, PPI Belanda was formally structured as a coordinating body in
2004, bringing together Indonesian student associations across cities in the Netherlands. In 2017, PPI Belanda
established its independent stance, further strengthening its organizational identity.
